FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON – Niagara District Airport (YCM) is celebrating its 96th birthday on September 13 and is spending this week taking a flight down memory lane, reflecting on moments that have helped shape its rich and unique history.
Originally opened in 1929 on the eastern edge of St. Catharines adjacent to the Welland Canal, Niagara District Airport was relocated three miles northeast in 1935 to where it is today. During World War II, the airport became home to the Number 9 Elementary Flight Training School for World War II pilots, and years later, in 1945, to the Number 4 Wireless Training Unit of the Royal Canadian Air Force. These chapters in its history underscore the airport’s lasting impact on the aviation world and its proud connection to Canada’s military heritage and history.
“We are incredibly lucky to have such a rich and robust history that makes up the foundation of what Niagara District Airport has been built on,” said Dan Pilon, chief executive officer. “We don’t take for granted the individuals and the businesses who have been so pivotal to our history over the last number of decades and we look forward to continuing to find ways to reflect and honour their stories in our daily operations.”
Niagara District Airport will be sharing photos on its social media accounts every day leading up to the anniversary, highlighting special pieces of history from over the years. People who have historical photos of the airport are invited to send them to NDA for a chance to have them featured this week.
